El Compendio del Catecismo fue preparado por una comisión presidida por el entonces cardenal Joseph Ratzinger. Respondiendo al anhelo de una mejor apreciación del Catecismo, y a fin de satisfacer una generalizada necesidad que surgió durante el Congreso Catequético Internacional del 2002, en el 2003 el Santo Padre estableció una comisión especial, presidida por el prefecto de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, a la que encargó preparar un Compendio del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, con una versión más concisa y dialogal del mismo contenido de la fe y moral católica.

Following the request for greater appreciation of the Catechism, and in order to meet a widespread need that emerged during the 2002 International Catechetical Congress, in 2003 the Holy Father established a special commission, presided by the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, that he charged with preparing a Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, containing a more concise and dialogic version of the same contents of Catholic faith and morals.
