Laborem Exercens, On Human Work promulgated on September 14, 1981, was written by John Paul II on the ninetieth anniversary of Leo XIII's great social encyclical Rerum Novarum on the question of labor. John Paul II develops in this encyclical the concept of the dignity of the human person in work covering particularly: the subordination of work to the person, the primacy of the workers over the instruments and conditioning that constitute the world of labor, the necessity of recognizing the rights of the human person as the determining factor of all socio-economic, technological and productive processes, and how we can identify with Christ through work.
